In a move that signals continued momentum in AI development, OpenAI is planning a private event focused on its latest model, GPT-5.5, in San Francisco on May 5.
The event, titled “GPT-5.5 on 5/5,” will run from 5:55 p.m. to 8:55 p.m. PDT and is strictly invite-only. Attendance requires prior registration and company approval, with the exact venue shared only with confirmed participants. According to details shared by CEO Sam Altman, responses to invitations will help determine attendees, supported by internal selection systems. He also noted the timing aligns with the GPT-5.5 naming.
The gathering is expected to bring together a select group of developers and OpenAI team members for what is described as a “low-key meetup.” While no formal announcements have been confirmed, the event may serve as a preview or showcase related to the GPT-5 model line.
GPT-5.5 was officially launched on April 24 and described by the company as a “new class of intelligence for real work and powering agents.” It includes improvements in agentic coding, computer-based tasks, knowledge work, and early-stage scientific research. The model has been rolled out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex, while GPT-5.5 Pro is being released to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
The event comes as OpenAI continues to host developer and policy-focused engagements, including its DevDay programs and forum sessions on AI applications across industries.
This development follows recent strategic moves, including integration of its AI models and Codex agent into Amazon Bedrock, a generative AI service from Amazon Web Services, and changes in its partnership with Microsoft. It also coincides with an ongoing legal dispute involving cofounder Elon Musk in a California court.
