Singapore is strengthening its position as a global artificial intelligence hub after OpenAI announced plans to launch its first applied AI lab outside the United States in the country.
The announcement was made alongside Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information, marking a major step in the company’s international expansion strategy.
As part of the move, OpenAI said it plans to expand its workforce in Singapore to nearly 200 roles over the next few years. The company will also invest more than S$300 million, equivalent to around $235 million, into its operations and AI initiatives in the city-state.
The partnership between OpenAI and Singapore will focus on advancing applied AI innovation, building AI talent, and improving access to artificial intelligence tools for citizens, businesses, and the public sector.
The new lab is expected to support research, enterprise AI applications, and talent development while helping organisations adopt AI technologies more effectively.
The development comes as Singapore continues pushing to become a leading AI innovation and technology hub in Asia. The country has been actively working to attract global AI companies, strengthen digital infrastructure, and expand its AI ecosystem as part of its long-term economic strategy.
OpenAI’s decision to establish its first overseas applied AI lab in Singapore highlights the country’s growing importance in the global AI landscape and reflects increasing international investment in the region’s technology sector.
The expansion also signals the rising demand for AI research, deployment, and workforce development beyond the United States as companies scale operations globally.
