OpenAI speeds up plans for AI-powered smartphone with advanced chipset

Fresh reports suggest that OpenAI is accelerating the development of its first AI-focused smartphone, with plans possibly moving ahead faster than expected.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company could begin mass production of the device as early as the first half of next year. This marks a major shift from earlier expectations, which indicated a 2028 timeline. The faster rollout may be linked to increasing competition in the AI phone segment and plans around a potential year-end IPO narrative.

The upcoming smartphone is expected to run on a MediaTek Dimensity chipset, likely produced using TSMC’s N2P process. MediaTek is said to be the exclusive chip supplier, although Qualcomm was previously considered.

The device could feature a customised version of the Dimensity 9600 chipset. Key highlights may include an upgraded image signal processor with enhanced HDR capabilities, a dual-NPU architecture for advanced AI processing, LPDDR6 memory, and UFS 5.0 storage. It is also expected to support pKVM and inline hashing for improved security.

If development stays on track, total shipments of the OpenAI smartphone across 2027 and 2028 could reach around 30 million units, the analyst said.

However, these details remain unconfirmed, as OpenAI has not officially announced any plans to launch its own smartphone.
