In an effort to improve user experience, Microsoft has introduced major changes to its Windows Update system, aiming to reduce interruptions while maintaining system security.
The update overhaul includes retiring Secure Boot certificates on most PCs after 15 years, alongside a new update rollout marked with a critical “Red” warning where action is required.
According to Windows Insider lead Marcus Ash, the goal is to create “Less disruption from Windows Update,” with “more clarity, more control,” as the system moves toward a single monthly restart by combining OS, .NET, and driver updates.
A key change gives users greater control over update timing. Users can now start, stop, or pause updates based on their schedule. They will also see standard “Restart” and “Shut down” options without being forced to install pending updates first. “You decide when updates happen, not the other way around.”
Microsoft acknowledged that updates, while essential for security and performance, often interrupt workflows. The company admitted that poorly timed updates can “critically break your flow,” an issue long faced by Windows users.
The new system also introduces separate restart and shutdown options after downloading updates, allowing users to skip installation when needed. Additionally, users can pause updates during the out-of-box experience (OOBE), reducing setup time by over 1 hour.
Another major change allows users to delay updates for up to 35 days, effectively enabling extended pauses. However, users are advised not to postpone updates indefinitely, as they remain critical for protecting systems from security threats.
The changes come after feedback that frequent updates and repeated restarts were frustrating users, with some experiencing up to 3 updates per month.
