In a major step toward secure cross-platform communication, Apple is introducing end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices with the upcoming iOS 26.5 update.
The feature is currently available in the release candidate version for developers and public testers. According to the update notes, “End-to-end encrypted RCS messaging (beta) in Messages is available with supported carriers and will roll out over time.”
This capability has been under testing since February and is based on the RCS Universal Profile developed by the GSMA. It ensures that messages exchanged between iPhone users and Android users cannot be accessed by third parties.
On iPhones, conversations with Android users will display “Text Message · RCS | [lock icon] Encrypted” within the Messages app. Similarly, on Android devices using Google Messages, a lock icon will indicate encrypted chats.
To enable the feature, users can navigate to Settings > Messages > RCS Messaging and ensure that “End-to-End Encryption (Beta)” is turned on. The setting is enabled by default. Android users must have the latest version of Google Messages installed.
The rollout will depend on carrier support and will be introduced gradually.
