In a move aimed at strengthening AI-driven cybersecurity capabilities, OpenAI on Tuesday introduced GPT-5.4-Cyber, a specialised variant of its latest flagship model designed specifically for defensive security applications. The launch comes shortly after Anthropic announced its frontier AI model Mythos.
Anthropic’s Mythos, revealed on April 7, is being deployed under “Project Glasswing”, a controlled programme that allows selected organisations to access the unreleased Claude Mythos Preview model for cybersecurity defence work. According to reports, the model has already identified “thousands” of critical vulnerabilities across operating systems, web browsers, and other software systems.
OpenAI stated that GPT-5.4-Cyber will initially be available on a limited basis to vetted cybersecurity vendors, approved organisations, and researchers. The company said this restricted rollout is due to the model’s more flexible design for advanced security research tasks.
Alongside the launch, OpenAI is expanding its Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) programme to include thousands of verified individual security defenders and hundreds of teams working to protect critical software infrastructure.
The TAC programme, which was introduced in February, is now being expanded with additional tiers of access. Each tier requires higher levels of verification, unlocking progressively more advanced capabilities within the system.
Users who qualify for the highest access tier will be granted permission to use GPT-5.4-Cyber for sensitive cybersecurity tasks, including vulnerability detection, analysis, and research with fewer operational restrictions compared to standard models.
OpenAI said the goal of these controlled access programmes is to support responsible use of advanced AI in cybersecurity while ensuring that powerful capabilities are limited to trusted experts working on defensive applications.
With GPT-5.4-Cyber, the company is positioning its latest model as a targeted tool for strengthening digital defence systems amid rising global cyber threats and increasing reliance on AI-powered security research.
