As competition in the artificial intelligence industry continues to grow, OpenAI is reportedly evaluating significant reductions in the token-based pricing it charges customers for accessing its AI models.

According to a report, the company is discussing lowering token costs to strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding enterprise AI market. Tokens are the standard units used by AI companies to measure and bill usage of their models.

A reduction in pricing could make OpenAI’s AI offerings more appealing to businesses that use AI for coding, customer support, research, and productivity-related tasks. The reported move comes amid increasing competition from Anthropic, which is also expected to consider pricing adjustments in the future.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently acknowledged concerns around AI expenses during the “Intelligence at Work” event. He described costs as “a huge issue” and indicated that the company is exploring ways to provide greater value to customers while lowering overall spending.

The report also highlighted growing concerns among enterprises regarding rising AI-related costs. Several organizations are reportedly reviewing budgets allocated to agentic AI systems. Earlier this year, an executive at Uber reportedly said the company had already exhausted its 2026 budget for agentic AI usage, while another executive questioned whether AI-assisted coding improvements were delivering meaningful customer-facing results.

The reported pricing discussions also come as speculation grows around OpenAI’s future public listing plans. According to reports, the company recently confidentially filed paperwork related to a potential initial public offering (IPO).

Reports further suggest that Altman informed employees through an internal Slack message that OpenAI intends to pursue a public listing within the next year.

OpenAI has not publicly commented on the reported plans to reduce token pricing or the ongoing discussions.
