In a significant upgrade aimed at developers, OpenAI has rolled out new capabilities for its coding platform Codex, expanding its functionality beyond traditional programming assistance.
The latest update introduces computer use, allowing Codex to autonomously operate a user’s desktop. It can view on-screen content, click icons, and type within applications and documents. This feature works in the background, giving users the flexibility to either monitor the process or continue their own tasks. The rollout has begun on macOS, with Windows and IDE support expected soon.
Codex also now includes native web access through an in-app browser. Users can interact directly with web pages by adding comments to guide the AI agent. However, this feature is currently limited to locally accessed web applications.
Another key addition is image generation and editing, powered by the GPT-image-1.5 AI model. This enables developers to create visuals for frontend designs, product concepts, mockups, and games, expanding Codex’s use cases beyond coding.
OpenAI highlighted that Codex is already being used by more than 3 million developers every week. To further enhance functionality, the company has introduced over 90 new plugins. These integrations allow Codex to gather context and perform actions across platforms such as Atlassian Rovo, CircleCI, CodeRabbit, GitLab Issues, Microsoft Suite, Remotion, Render, and Superpowers.
Additional improvements include support for GitHub review comments, the ability to run multiple terminal tabs, and connectivity to remote development environments via SSH in alpha. OpenAI is also introducing a memory feature in preview, enabling Codex to retain context from past interactions, including user preferences, corrections, and research inputs.
The update comes on the same day another AI company released a new model focused on software engineering, highlighting the growing competition in the developer tools space.
