NASA has introduced a new experimental aircraft, the X-70 Fractal, aimed at accelerating the development and testing of next-generation aviation technologies. The high-performance research platform was unveiled on Wednesday during the UP.Summit at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The crewed X-70 features advanced, rapidly reconfigurable flight-control technology that will allow researchers to explore aircraft manoeuvrability in ways not previously demonstrated in crewed flight. It can also carry up to 2,000 pounds of experimental payloads in internal and external compartments, supporting a wide range of research and flight-testing activities.

“The X-70 Fractal gives NASA a crewed, high-performance platform to test advanced flight-control, maneuverability, and other cutting-edge technologies in real flight,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

He added that the aircraft’s modular design and ability to accommodate different internal and external payloads would help research teams move quickly between experiments. NASA expects the aircraft to complete its first flight under the agency’s banner within the next 2 years.

The X-70 has a takeoff weight of 10,000 pounds and is designed to cruise at Mach 0.75. It can reach altitudes of up to 45,000 feet and has an operational range of approximately 1,726 miles, equivalent to 1,500 nautical miles. These capabilities are expected to support demanding flight research across different operating conditions.

“For decades, NASA Aeronautics has used X-planes to develop technologies that advance aviation,” said Laurie Grindle, director of the Aeronautics Division within NASA’s Research and Technology Mission Directorate. She also highlighted the importance of introducing another experimental aircraft to accelerate aeronautics research.

The X-70 adds to NASA’s long history of experimental aircraft that have contributed to advancements in aviation. This legacy includes the Bell X-1, which first broke the sound barrier in 1947, the X-15 hypersonic research aircraft and the X-59 quiet supersonic demonstrator.

With the introduction of the X-70, NASA aims to expand its experimental flight research capabilities, speed up the testing of emerging technologies and support the development of the next generation of American aviation.
