Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to 7% of US workforce amid rising AI investments

Amid a major shift towards artificial intelligence, Microsoft has introduced a voluntary buyout programme for a section of its employees in the United States for the first time in its history.

The initiative is aimed at employees who meet the company’s “rule of 70”, where the sum of an employee’s age and years of service equals at least 70. This move is designed to target long-serving staff, offering them financial incentives to exit the company. Around 7% of Microsoft’s US workforce is expected to qualify under this scheme.

The company said the programme is intended to give flexibility to employees who may be planning retirement or considering a transition. It also aligns with broader organisational changes as Microsoft shifts resources towards key areas such as AI development and cloud infrastructure.

The company has been significantly increasing its investments in data centres to support growing demand for computing power needed for generative AI models and cloud services.

This development comes at a time when technology companies are rethinking workforce strategies due to rapid industry changes, especially the increasing focus on AI-driven products and services.

In a parallel move, Meta Platforms has confirmed layoffs impacting 10% of its workforce, which is about 8,000 employees. The company is also eliminating nearly 6,000 open roles as part of its cost-cutting efforts.

These developments highlight a broader trend in the tech sector, where companies are balancing heavy investments in AI with efforts to optimise their workforce. While Microsoft is offering voluntary exits to experienced employees, Meta is implementing direct job cuts, reflecting different strategies to manage costs and reshape operations in an AI-focused environment.
