In a new approach to advancing artificial intelligence, Meta plans to use internal employee data, including keystrokes and mouse movements, to train its AI models. The initiative reflects the company’s effort to build more capable and efficient systems by learning from real-world computer usage.

The development, first reported by Reuters, highlights how technology firms are exploring new sources of training data, a critical component that helps AI systems improve performance and respond more effectively to tasks and user interactions.

According to a statement shared with TechCrunch, Meta said: “If we’re building agents to help people complete everyday tasks using computers, our models need real examples of how people actually use them — things like mouse movements, clicking buttons, and navigating dropdown menus. To help, we’re launching an internal tool that will capture these kinds of inputs on certain applications to help us train our models. There are safeguards in place to protect sensitive content, and the data is not used for any other purpose.”

The move points to a broader trend in the AI industry, where companies are actively seeking new data sources to improve model training. It also raises concerns around privacy, as organisations increasingly explore internal data such as workplace activity and digital interactions.

Recent reports indicate that some older startups are also being examined for their archived communications, including Slack messages and Jira tickets, which may be repurposed as AI training data.
