Meta has appointed MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead a newly created business focused on bringing the company’s AI models, agents and tools to corporate customers.
Desai will serve as Meta’s Chief Enterprise Platform Officer and report directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. His mandate will include turning Meta’s AI technology stack into products and services that businesses can deploy across their operations.
The new Meta Enterprise Platform will include AI models, agents and tools such as Muse, Meta Business Agent and coding solutions. Meta launched Muse earlier this month as a personal AI agent designed to handle tasks including shopping, travel bookings, emails and payments.
Muse has climbed the Apple App Store and Google Play rankings in recent weeks. Analysts have described its rise as potentially one of the biggest US app launches since ChatGPT in November 2022, which helped accelerate the broader AI boom.
Desai’s move comes less than 1 year after he became CEO of MongoDB, where he succeeded Dev Ittycheria. MongoDB has appointed Ittycheria as interim CEO while it searches for a permanent replacement.
MongoDB shares fell 18% in morning trading on Monday following the announcement. Brokerage Piper Sandler said, “While the departure is disappointing, we believe MongoDB remains well-positioned strategically and view the share-price reaction as overdone.”
Before joining MongoDB, Desai led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly 8 years at ServiceNow, including serving as president and chief operating officer.
MongoDB provides database software that businesses use to build and operate applications, with capabilities spanning data management, search, analytics and AI.
