Kerala Police warns of fake update scam targeting smartphone users

Raising concerns over a new wave of cyber threats, Kerala Police has issued a warning about a fraud targeting users of Vivo and iQOO smartphones through fake “OriginOS Update” messages.

According to an official statement, users are being shown pop-up alerts such as “Urgent System Update Required” while using their devices. Clicking on these links leads to the download of malicious files instead of legitimate software updates.

Once installed, the malware allows fraudsters to take control of the device. This includes access to the camera, microphone, SMS, contacts, and other personal data. The main objective of the scam is to steal sensitive information, including banking credentials, and siphon money from victims’ accounts.

The police have advised users to install updates only through the official “System Update” option available in phone settings. They have warned against using links received via browsers or messages and cautioned users not to respond to threatening alerts claiming their phone will be blocked if updates are not installed.

As a safety measure, users are advised to keep the “Install from Unknown Sources” option disabled and use trusted antivirus software on their devices.

In case of accidental clicks on such links, users should immediately disconnect the internet, scan their device using security applications, and remove any suspicious apps. They should also change passwords for banking and social media accounts using a secure device.

Victims of financial fraud are advised to report incidents immediately by calling the cyber helpline number 1930 or by filing a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Portal.
