Kaiser Permanente has appointed Shaun Smith as Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer, effective October 12. In this role, Smith will lead the organisation’s human resources strategy and operations, focusing on talent development, employee engagement and workplace culture.
Smith will oversee initiatives to strengthen career development opportunities and help employees build long-term careers within the organisation. He will also support Kaiser Permanente’s multiyear efforts to improve workplace culture and create an environment where employees can perform at their best.
Greg A. Adams, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Kaiser Permanente, highlighted Smith’s experience in labour relations, organisational transformation, talent strategy and culture. He said Smith’s leadership would help the organisation invest in its workforce, expand career development opportunities and strengthen support for employees serving members, patients and communities.
In his new position, Smith will report to Adams on enterprise-wide people strategy and broader organisational responsibilities. He will also report to Craig T. Albanese, MD, President of Integrated Care and Coverage, for day-to-day operational leadership involving human resources, people strategy, labour strategy and labour relations.
The reporting structure reflects the organisation’s focus on aligning its workforce strategy with the delivery of healthcare services.
Smith brings more than 25 years of human resources leadership experience in academic health systems. Before joining Kaiser Permanente, he served as Group Senior Vice President and Chief People and Culture Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian.
He holds a law degree and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pace University.
With his experience in workforce management, organisational transformation and talent strategy, Smith will lead efforts to strengthen Kaiser Permanente’s people practices and support its long-term organisational priorities.
