JioStar accelerates AI-driven entertainment plans with new content lineup

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the entertainment industry, JioStar is preparing to significantly expand its use of AI-generated content following the success of its first AI-created series on JioHotstar. The company is now planning a lineup of shows that will be written, animated, voiced, and edited entirely using AI technology.

The media and entertainment company, a joint venture between Reliance Industries and Disney, sees AI as an opportunity to reduce production costs while scaling content creation. To support this initiative, JioStar plans to hire around 80 AI specialists and engineers. A company representative has confirmed both the hiring plans and the development of additional AI-generated projects.

The move comes after the success of Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, an AI-generated adaptation of the ancient Indian epic. The 100-episode series attracted 6.5 million views on its debut day in October, more than double the platform’s average viewership. The show retold the Kurukshetra War between the Kauravas and Pandavas, a central story from one of Hinduism’s most revered texts.

Building on this momentum, JioStar is developing several new AI-powered projects, including the television series Makaraj, the feature film Hanuman, and multiple micro-dramas. Hanuman focuses on the revered monkey god from the Ramayana, known for devotion, loyalty, and strength.

The company’s broader rollout could make it the first major mainstream studio in India to launch multiple AI-generated series, although smaller production houses have already experimented with AI-based movies and short-form dramas.

Earlier this year, JioStar appointed Stephan Bugaj, an award-winning screenwriter and content producer from the United States, to lead its Generative AI content strategy. His team is currently recruiting talent to support future projects.

Despite strong viewership, the AI-generated Mahabharat series also faced criticism from some viewers, who pointed to visual errors such as distorted faces and characters with extra fingers. However, the company believes these challenges can be addressed through advancing AI technologies and improved content-generation tools.
