International 5G connectivity has taken a new step as Reliance Jio and T-Mobile announced a 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection between their networks, which they describe as the world’s first such connection.
The milestone allows T-Mobile customers travelling to India to access 5G SA roaming through Jio’s network. The companies said the setup can offer faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connectivity than earlier roaming systems.
The connection is enabled through Syniverse’s global connectivity and mediation platform, which provides the interconnection between the 2 networks. Syniverse said its platform and SEPP capabilities can help operators test and deploy 5G SA roaming as more networks adopt the technology.
The development is significant for Jio, which operates a nationwide 5G SA network in India. Unlike non-standalone 5G, which partly relies on existing 4G infrastructure, 5G SA uses a dedicated 5G core network. This allows lower latency and supports services that need more consistent network performance.
Under the new setup, T-Mobile customers travelling internationally can experience 5G SA roaming. The company described the deployment as the first of its kind globally.
Mark Yarkosky, Head of International Network, Partnership and Services at Jio, said the development is a step towards greater interoperability between 5G SA networks. He added that the technology could support new consumer and enterprise services, including AI-enabled services that use 5G Standalone capabilities.
T-Mobile said it began work on its 5G SA network in 2020. The company said its partnership with Jio will allow customers to maintain a more seamless 5G experience when travelling between countries.
