India’s human spaceflight programme is moving closer to a major milestone as the timeline for its first uncrewed mission is set to be announced.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is expected to announce the launch date for the first uncrewed mission under the Gaganyaan programme this week, according to its chairperson.
The upcoming uncrewed mission is a crucial step before India sends astronauts into space. ISRO has planned 3 uncrewed missions to validate systems, safety protocols, and mission operations ahead of the crewed flight.
The mission, commonly referred to as Gaganyaan-1, is part of a broader roadmap focused on ensuring mission reliability and astronaut safety. Preparations for the mission are progressing steadily.
The first test flight is expected in the first quarter of 2026, although the exact launch date has not yet been confirmed.
These missions will test critical technologies such as crew escape systems, human-rated launch vehicles, and overall mission operations, all essential for a successful human spaceflight.
The Gaganyaan programme aims to place astronauts in low Earth orbit for a short-duration mission, positioning India among a select group of nations with independent human spaceflight capabilities.
The upcoming announcement is expected to provide greater clarity on timelines as ISRO advances one of its most ambitious space initiatives.
