Mahindra University launches policy centre as Hyderabad drives GCC expansion

Amid growing focus on global capability centres (GCC) in India, Mahindra University has launched its Economic Policy Centre to drive research and policy discussions on key economic issues. The initiative highlights Hyderabad’s rising importance in the GCC ecosystem.

Speaking at the inaugural event themed “Hyderabad: Powering India’s GCC Ecosystem”, Telangana IT Minister D Sridhar Babu emphasised the city’s strong growth as a preferred destination for global firms.

“Hyderabad has emerged as an attractive destination for global capability centres, driven by its strong infrastructure, progressive policy environment and deep talent pool. As global firms look to build resilient and future-ready operations, it is critical for us to continue strengthening our ecosystem through innovation, research and industry collaboration. Platforms like this Economic Policy Centre play an important role in shaping ideas that will power the next phase of India’s transformation,” he said.

He further noted that Telangana is well positioned to lead the next phase of digital transformation, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration between academia and policymakers.

Mahindra University Vice-Chancellor Dr Yajulu Medury said, “The Economic Policy Centre will help drive meaningful conversations on issues that matter to India’s growth story, beginning with Hyderabad’s emergence as a leading GCC hub. We are creating an ecosystem where academic rigor meets real-world application by ensuring that our research contributes directly to the nation’s socio-economic blueprint.”

The event brought together policymakers, economists, and industry leaders to discuss key drivers behind Hyderabad’s GCC growth, including policy support, infrastructure, investment inflows, and access to skilled talent.

Dr Nilanjan Banik, who leads the centre, said, “The launch of the Economic Policy Centre comes at an important time, as India deepens its role in global value chains and capability-led services. Our first event on GCCs will bring together diverse perspectives to understand how policy, talent, and infrastructure can strengthen India’s competitiveness.”

Development economist Dr Amir Ullah Khan added that “time is ripe for Indian private Universities to take a lead and work closely with the government for research and training.”
