Breaking away from conventional foldable designs, Huawei has introduced the world’s first horizontally wide foldable smartphone, gaining an early lead over competitors like Apple and Samsung.
The new device, Pura X Max, features a wide, tablet-like display instead of the tall and narrow format seen in most foldables today. Its passport-style design offers a broader screen with an aspect ratio closer to 4:3.
Unlike traditional foldables that open into near-square displays, this design focuses on a wider viewing experience. It enhances media consumption by reducing black bars and making video playback and reading more seamless.
When folded, the device remains compact but noticeably wider. It includes a triple rear camera setup and a display with a minimal crease. The phone is expected to be available in multiple colour options, including white, orange, and purple.
While full specifications are yet to be disclosed, pre-orders have already begun in China. Additional details are expected to be announced around April 21.
This launch places Huawei ahead in a category where Apple and Samsung are also reportedly developing similar wide-format foldable devices expected later this year.
As the smartphone market evolves, brands are exploring new form factors to drive premium innovation. Huawei’s latest move signals a shift in how foldable devices could be designed and experienced going forward.
