Gurugram Police conducts cyber safety drive to warn citizens about online scams

As online scams become more varied, Gurugram Police is urging citizens to take precautions to protect their money, personal information and digital accounts. The Cyber Police team recently held a special awareness programme in Sector 22A, Gurugram, to explain common cybercrime tactics and ways to prevent fraud.

During the session, officers warned that cybercriminals continue to develop new methods to target people. These crimes can cause financial losses as well as mental and social distress. Citizens were advised to avoid suspicious offers and false promises.

Police highlighted several common scams, including investment offers promising high returns, stock market fraud, impersonation of customs or police officials, threats involving allegedly suspicious items in parcels, and demands for money in the name of issuing a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

The team also explained how fraudsters misuse photographs from social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to create fake profiles. They then contact the victim’s friends or relatives, claim to be facing an emergency and ask for money. Citizens were advised to use privacy settings and profile-locking features wherever available. Fake accounts should be reported to the relevant platform immediately.

To prevent sextortion-related fraud, police urged people not to answer video calls from unknown numbers. They also recommended enabling 2-factor authentication, updating devices and systems regularly, avoiding unsafe public Wi-Fi connections and using secure private networks.

Other precautions include avoiding links from unknown sources, changing ATM and credit card PINs periodically, and never sharing banking details with anyone. Police specifically warned people against searching online for wine-delivery customer care numbers, as fraudsters may exploit these searches to target unsuspecting users.

The programme stressed that awareness and safe online habits are essential to reducing cybercrime risks. Citizens were encouraged to stay informed about emerging threats and remain cautious while using digital services.

Anyone who falls victim to cyber fraud should report the incident immediately by calling the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930.

Gurugram Police reiterated its commitment to protecting and serving citizens 24×7.
