India prepares updated IT hardware PLI strategy to boost electronics manufacturing growth

India’s push to strengthen local electronics manufacturing is expected to get a fresh boost as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) plans to revamp the IT hardware Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme later this year. The proposed changes are aimed at improving participation, expanding manufacturing capabilities, and accelerating India’s position in the global electronics supply chain.

According to officials, the revised scheme is likely to focus on increasing domestic value addition and encouraging more companies to manufacture laptops, tablets, servers, personal computers, and related hardware products in India. The move comes as the government continues to position India as a major global technology manufacturing hub.

The current IT hardware PLI scheme has already attracted several global and domestic players. However, officials believe there is scope to improve the structure further to make it more competitive and aligned with evolving industry needs. The revamp is also expected to support India’s larger goal of reducing dependence on imports and strengthening local production ecosystems.

The updated framework may include revised incentive structures, stronger supply chain support, and measures to attract higher investments into component manufacturing and advanced electronics production. Officials indicated that the government is actively engaging with industry stakeholders before finalising the changes.

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has seen significant growth over the past few years, supported by government-backed incentives and rising global demand for supply chain diversification. The IT hardware segment is now becoming a key focus area as companies increasingly look for alternative manufacturing destinations outside traditional markets.

Industry experts believe the proposed revamp could help India attract additional investments, create skilled jobs, and expand exports in the electronics sector. The move also aligns with the country’s broader digital and manufacturing ambitions under its long-term economic growth strategy.
