In a move aimed at simplifying identity verification, Google has expanded its digital identity services in India by adding support for Aadhaar credentials within Google Wallet.
The feature allows users to store a digital version of their Aadhaar card, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), directly on their smartphones. According to the company, this enables a more convenient way to verify identity without carrying a physical document.
Users can now add Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials to Google Wallet, creating a secure, consent-based identity system. The digital ID uses on-device encryption and supports selective disclosure, allowing users to control what information they share.
The integration is designed for everyday use. Google has partnered with platforms such as PVR Inox for age verification and rewards, BharatMatrimony for verified profiles, Atlys for visa application autofill, and Mygate for verifying delivery and service personnel. Snabbit is also expected to adopt the feature soon.
Once added, the digital Aadhaar can be used for both in-person and remote identity verification. However, Google clarified that it does not replace the physical Aadhaar card and is valid only for supported use cases.
On the security front, the company stated that Aadhaar data stored in Google Wallet remains encrypted on the device and is not saved on the cloud. Personal details like name and address are shared only with user consent. Users can store only 1 Aadhaar card per account, and access is protected through device authentication.
Alongside India, Google has also expanded its digital ID support to markets like Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil. In these regions, users can create ID passes using passport details and store them in Google Wallet for identity and age verification across services.
