Amid intensifying competition in artificial intelligence, Google is sharpening its focus on coding capabilities by forming a dedicated team within its DeepMind division.
According to a report, the company has assembled a specialised group of researchers and engineers to build advanced coding-focused AI models. The initiative aims to narrow the gap with rival AI firm Anthropic and strengthen Google’s position in the high-value enterprise AI market.
The newly formed team is reportedly led by research engineer Sebastian Borgeaud, who has previously worked on pre-training AI models. The group is focusing on complex coding tasks, including long-horizon programming, building complete software systems from scratch, and enabling AI models to read and understand files for better context.
The broader goal is to develop AI systems capable of handling end-to-end software development with minimal human intervention.
Senior leadership is said to be closely involved in this effort. Reports indicate that Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin and DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu are actively guiding the initiative. In an internal note, Brin reportedly emphasised the urgency to “urgently bridge the gap in agentic execution and turn our models into primary developers.” He also encouraged engineers working on Gemini to use internal AI agents for more complex tasks.
The move comes as AI companies increasingly prioritise coding capabilities. Industry leaders believe that Anthropic currently holds an edge in this space, prompting Google to accelerate its efforts.
The shift also reflects rising enterprise demand for AI tools that can autonomously write, test, and manage code. Recently, OpenAI enhanced its Codex platform with features such as Computer Use and image generation, enabling it to access files, run programs, and iterate on software builds more effectively.
With competition heating up, major AI players are now racing to build systems that can handle complex programming workflows independently, marking the next phase of AI-driven software development.
