Android users could soon get more control over some of Google’s strongest security settings. A recent APK teardown suggests that it may allow selected Advanced Protection features to be switched off individually through a new optional section.
Google introduced Android Advanced Protection Mode (AAPM) with Android 16 in 2025 to strengthen protection against malware, phishing, online attacks and unauthorised access. At present, users have limited control over its individual security features.
A teardown of Google Play Services version 26.36.30 reportedly found signs of a new “Expert features” section within Advanced Protection Settings. The section could include Intrusion Detection, USB Protection and Unsecured Wi-Fi Networks.
Screenshots of the feature show the message: “Expert features offer a higher level of protection, which may come with some additional restrictions.”
Currently, Intrusion Logging is the only Advanced Protection component that Google lists as optional. The proposed changes could give users greater flexibility while keeping other security measures enabled.
USB Protection restricts new USB connections when the phone is locked. It is already available on Pixel 6 and newer devices and can delay fast charging until the screen is unlocked. If moved to the Expert features section, users could potentially turn it off without disabling other Advanced Protection measures.
Google may also make unsecured Wi-Fi protection optional. This would allow users to bypass restrictions on automatically connecting to open, WEP or OWE networks.
AAPM protects both Android devices and Google Accounts. It applies security settings across Google apps, including Chrome, Google Messages and Phone by Google, as well as third-party applications.
The mode enforces Google Play Protect and blocks installations from unknown sources. It also includes Theft Detection, Lock Offline Device, USB Protection, failed-authentication locks and AI-based Scam Detection. In addition, it prevents connections to less secure 2G networks.
