Strengthening its focus on digital learning, Google has announced a nationwide initiative to expand artificial intelligence education, training, and tools across India’s academic ecosystem through new partnerships for teachers and students.
The announcement was made on May 19 at the Education World Forum 2026 in London. According to Google, the initiative aligns with the objectives of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
As part of the rollout, Google introduced the Google AI Educator Series (GES), a mobile-first training programme designed for teachers in schools and higher education institutions. The programme will be implemented in collaboration with the governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Assam, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Punjab School Education Board.
Google said the training programme has been customised for Indian educators and will be delivered in a mobile-friendly format to improve accessibility. During the pilot phase, the programme will be available in 6 Indian languages including Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi. The company plans to gradually expand the initiative across the country.
The programme aims to help teachers understand the responsible use of AI tools in classrooms while supporting modern teaching practices in schools and colleges.
In addition, Google announced a 3-year partnership with UNICEF across India, Brazil, Pakistan, and Kenya. Google described the collaboration as a first-of-its-kind initiative combining its technology capabilities with UNICEF’s education system expertise.
Under the partnership, AI-powered tools such as Gemini and ReadAlong will be introduced into learning environments to support literacy and numeracy development. The initiative will also focus on responsible AI adoption and strengthening foundational learning outcomes.
Google stated that the project will receive support from Google for Education and Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm. UNICEF will work with governments and local education systems to implement the tools based on regional educational needs.
The announcement comes at a time when schools and institutions globally are exploring AI-based learning systems. However, discussions around accessibility, teacher readiness, and the responsible use of AI continue to remain central to the adoption of such technologies in classrooms.
