Perplexity explains reduced usage limits after users report sudden restrictions

Several Perplexity users recently reported a sharp drop in their account usage limits, with many claiming their daily query limits were getting exhausted after only a few searches.

The issue appears to have affected both free-tier users and paid subscribers, leading to confusion and frustration across the platform’s online community.

Users shared their concerns on Reddit, where multiple posts on the r/perplexity_ai subreddit highlighted the sudden restrictions. One user wrote, “I mainly use GPT and Gemini inside Perplexity, but I honestly use very few queries per week. There’s basically no way I actually exceeded even the 100-query limit.”

Another user said, “Perplexity is getting crazier. It has reached its limits after a few chats. I wonder how many limits they apply now.”

According to discussions online, some affected users experienced reductions ranging from 20% to 80% in their usage limits. Reports suggest the issue impacted accounts globally across different subscription tiers.

A spokesperson from Perplexity later addressed the issue in a statement provided to a technology publication.

“Some users are seeing different usage limits because their accounts are tied to promotional-code offers, and we’ve had to adjust enforcement due to fraud and unauthorised resale of those codes, including cases where people may have unknowingly purchased invalid codes from third parties. We’re working to make the applicable limits clearer for affected users and will continue helping anyone who believes they were impacted in error, while continuing to enforce our terms against abuse.”

The statement indicates that the company intentionally reduced usage limits on certain accounts linked to promotional Pro membership codes due to concerns over misuse and unauthorised reselling.

Some users later claimed their usage limits returned to normal, suggesting that certain accounts may have been mistakenly restricted. Another user also reported receiving a “low credits” message after searches were accidentally routed through Computer mode.

Perplexity has not yet disclosed how many users were impacted or how affected users can formally request support.
