Google is taking another step towards making Search more focused on helping users make decisions, with its latest AI weather model now being integrated across several of its products.
The company has introduced WeatherNext 3, its most advanced global-scale AI weather model, which Google says can deliver forecasts with up to 50% greater accuracy.
The model brings several improvements to weather information, including:
- Hourly updates
- More detailed local weather forecasts
- Real-time satellite data
- Improved rain forecasts
Google is rolling out WeatherNext 3 globally across Search, Gemini, Maps, Google Maps Platform, Earth Engine and Cloud.
The update reflects a broader shift in how Google is developing Search. Rather than simply directing users to a list of webpages, the company is increasingly positioning Search as a tool that can help people understand information, plan activities and make decisions.
Weather is a strong example of this approach, as forecasts are often used to make decisions related to travel, work, outdoor activities and business operations.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently described the longer-term direction of Search, saying, “I feel like in search, with every shift, you’re able to do more with it.”
He added, “…If I fast forward, a lot of what are just information seeking queries will be agentic search. You will be completing tasks, you have many threads running.”
Pichai also described a future where “Search would be an agent manager”, allowing users to work across multiple tasks and get things done through Search.
The WeatherNext 3 rollout fits into that broader vision. The significance of the update is not simply that Google is adding improved weather information to its search-related products, but that AI is increasingly being used to turn information into something more actionable.
As Google continues developing Search, the experience is gradually moving beyond the traditional 10 blue links towards a more task-oriented interface designed to help users find information, plan and act.
