Google enhances NotebookLM with AI-generated 60-second video summaries

Google is expanding the capabilities of NotebookLM by introducing AI-generated Short Video Overviews, making it easier for users to quickly understand lengthy documents and research material. The new feature transforms uploaded content into concise, narrated videos designed for faster learning and revision.

The latest addition allows NotebookLM users to create AI-generated videos that summarise uploaded sources in around 60 seconds. These videos combine narrative explanations with educational animations to present key information in a simple and engaging format.

The feature builds on NotebookLM’s evolution from an AI-powered research assistant into a broader learning platform. Unlike the existing Visual Overviews, the new Short Video Overviews are designed for users who need quick revisions of notes, presentations, research papers or other lengthy documents.

Google said the feature is powered by its Nano Banana 2 Lite model, introduced earlier this year. The model is designed for image generation and editing while also supporting short AI video creation, maintaining the visual quality available in Cinematic Video Overviews.

Users can access the feature by selecting the Short output format within NotebookLM before choosing the documents they want to summarise. They can further customise the video by selecting suggested topics or entering a custom prompt to define the video’s focus.

Based on the interface preview shared by the company, NotebookLM will offer 3 output formats — Short, Explainer, and Cinematic. Users will also be able to select individual sources and specify the primary topic before generating the AI-powered video.

Google said Short Video Overviews will begin rolling out over the coming weeks for English-speaking users aged 18 years and above. The feature will be available for both consumer and Google Workspace users across the web, Android and iOS versions of NotebookLM.
