Google Docs adds Gemini AI tools for smarter comment management

Google is making it easier to handle document feedback with new Gemini-powered comment workflows in Google Docs. The update helps users understand collaborator feedback, draft replies, add comments and turn reviewer suggestions into proposed document edits.

Gemini can now manage comments in Google Docs

The new features allow Gemini to read, summarise and act on comments across a document. Users can ask Gemini to summarise comment threads, identify key themes and highlight unresolved issues.

Gemini can also draft responses to open comment threads. Users can review the suggested replies before responding to collaborators. The AI can also add comments on behalf of users and suggest changes to document content based on reviewer feedback.

For document edits, Gemini generates suggested changes that users can review, approve and apply to the document.

Users can access the new tools through queries entered in the bottom bar or the Gemini side panel in Google Docs. Google has also introduced proactive prompts. These can suggest summarising comments when a new document is opened or creating a draft reply when an existing comment thread is selected.

The Gemini-powered comment workflows are currently rolling out to Google Docs users with edit access. The rollout may take up to 15 days to reach all eligible users.

The feature is available to Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, and Education Plus users. Google AI Pro for Education users, along with Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, can also access the new Gemini-powered comment features.
