A review of data from an early cybercrime forum shows that many practices now associated with modern ransomware operations were already developing nearly 2 decades ago.
The analysis examined a data dump from Exploit.in covering its first 3 years, from February 2005 to May 2008. The database contained nearly 10,000 members and more than 80,000 posts, offering insight into how cybercrime communities operated during the forum’s early period.
The findings show a strong continuity of users and practices that have remained part of the cybercrime ecosystem for 20 years. Unlike the common view of cybercrime forums as purely criminal marketplaces, Exploit.in also functioned as a social space where members discussed topics such as cars and mobile phones.
Activity patterns suggested that many participants had daytime jobs or were in school rather than working in organized criminal shifts. At the same time, a large share of registered users remained inactive, while a small group of highly active members produced most of the forum’s content.
The forum also used structures that resemble those found in today’s ransomware-as-a-service operations. Private discussions were protected by tiered access, while reputation systems helped build trust for transactions.
The evolution from public reputation lists to modern escrow services, along with the shift from basic access levels to affiliate vetting, shows a clear connection between early forum practices and current cybercrime operations.
The data also identified a significant number of Exploit.in user handles on later cybercrime forums. This suggests that some individuals remained active in the cybercrime landscape across different platforms and over long periods.
