In a significant digital reform move, the Ministry of Labour and Employment is preparing to introduce a new facility that will allow 7.48 crore active subscribers of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to withdraw up to 75% of their provident fund balance through a UPI interface directly into linked bank accounts.

According to top sources, the Ministry is looking for the right time to officially announce the EPFO 3.0 reform. The initiative aims to improve ease of living, reduce lengthy paperwork, and speed up claims processing for subscribers.

Out of 29 crore registered PF accounts, 7.48 crore are currently active, while the remaining accounts are dormant. The upcoming digital upgrade will introduce a completely new system architecture supported by core banking solutions at the backend of the centralised platform. Members will also get access to PF service records in a format similar to banking services, enabling issue resolution from any EPFO office across the country.

Mansukh Mandaviya said the EPFO has launched mission-mode initiatives to reduce PF-related litigation and ensure faster disposal of pending cases across legal forums.

Under the ‘Nidhi Aapke Nikat’ (NAN) programme, cases were identified in advance for quicker resolution. As a result, pending consumer cases reduced to 2,646 as of March 31, 2026, compared to 4,936 cases on April 1, 2024.

The overall number of pending litigation cases also declined from 31,036 on April 1, 2025, to 27,639 on April 1, 2026, marking a reduction of 3,397 cases and the lowest-ever litigation pendency level for EPFO.

The Minister added that cases pending for more than 10 years dropped from 8,539 to 4,665, reflecting a reduction of 3,874 cases or nearly 45.4%.

During February-March 2026, EPFO also conducted a nationwide campaign for cases pending before Central Government Industrial Tribunals, leading to the disposal of 353 appeals, while efforts continue for another 650 related cases. The EPFO is also planning to use WhatsApp to improve member outreach and streamline services.
