A new partnership in the AI industry is drawing attention as Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX will provide Anthropic access to its Colossus 1 supercomputer to power AI model operations.
The agreement comes at a time when Musk is involved in a legal battle with OpenAI, a major rival to Anthropic. Interestingly, Anthropic also competes directly with Musk’s AI venture, xAI.
Speaking on X, Musk said he recently met Anthropic’s senior leadership to understand how the company ensures that its AI model, Claude, remains safe for humanity. He stated, “to understand what they do to ensure Claude is good for humanity and was impressed.”
Musk added that Anthropic’s team convinced him they genuinely care about responsible AI development. He further said, “No one set off my evil detector. So long as they engage in critical self-examination, Claude will probably be good.”
The partnership is significant because Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI claims the company moved away from its original non-profit mission of building safe and open AI for public benefit.
Musk also revealed that giving Anthropic access to Colossus 1 would not affect SpaceXAI’s operations because “SpaceXAI had already moved training to Colossus 2.”
According to SpaceX, Colossus 1 is among the world’s largest AI supercomputers and includes more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, including H100, H200, and GB200 accelerators. The system supports AI training, fine-tuning, inference, and other high-performance computing tasks.
The move quickly sparked reactions online, with many users suggesting Musk may be supporting Anthropic to strengthen competition against OpenAI.
Soon after securing additional computing power, Anthropic announced major upgrades for Claude users. The company doubled Claude Code’s 5-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, while also removing peak-hour restrictions for some accounts. API limits for Opus models were also increased.
Anthropic has also expressed interest in working with SpaceX on future orbital AI computing projects. The idea focuses on building space-based data centres with sustainable power and reduced environmental impact on Earth.
