Artificial intelligence is becoming a major growth engine for Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India, helping them evolve from execution-focused operations into strategic ownership and innovation hubs, according to the latest Nasscom-Zinnov report titled “The GCC Value Orbit.”
The report states that India currently hosts more than 2,117 GCCs and 3,728 GCC units, reflecting a 32% increase since FY21. Together, these centres generate nearly $98.4 billion in revenue and employ around 2.36 million people across the country.
The study highlights that over 1,200 GCCs in India now have artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities, while more than 250 companies have established dedicated AI and ML Centres of Excellence.
India also accounts for 28% of the global GCC AI talent pool, making it the second-largest contributor after the United States. The report noted that AI hiring within Indian GCCs outpaced the US during the second half of FY25.
Rajesh Nambiar, President of Nasscom, said, “The shift from scale to value is now well underway, with AI acting as the catalyst. GCCs are increasingly taking ownership of global products, platforms, and business outcomes, positioning India as a strategic nerve centre for enterprises worldwide. The next phase of growth will be defined by how effectively these centres can drive enterprise-wide transformation and deliver measurable impact.”
The report also noted that nearly 50% of GCCs in India have reached a high maturity stage, particularly in areas such as applications and chip design. Additionally, 96% of GCCs established after FY21 launched with a product or portfolio mandate.
As the ecosystem matures, Indian GCCs are increasingly collaborating with service providers, startups, academic institutions, and governments to accelerate innovation and improve capability development timelines.
