Cybercrime reports in Nagaland are heavily concentrated in 2 districts, with Dimapur and Kohima together accounting for around 80-85% of cases reported across the state.
The data was shared on Tuesday by Kihika Chishi, Officer-in-Charge of the Cyber Crime Police Station at Police Headquarters, during a media workshop, Vartalap, on Cyber Suraksha Bharat at Hotel Saramati in Dimapur.
The workshop covered 2 themes — “An Overview of Cyber Crime in Nagaland” and “Legal Perspective on Defamation & Journalistic Responsibilities”.
Chishi said most reported cybercrime cases involve cheating, impersonation and financial fraud. Criminals are increasingly using smishing, phishing and vishing methods to target victims.
Investment scams have also emerged as a major concern. Fraudsters use social media advertisements that promise unusually high returns to attract victims.
In a recent case cited by Chishi, an elderly woman searching online for an SBI helpline number called a fraudulent number instead. She shared her OTPs and lost her savings. Police advised people to use only helpline numbers printed on their bank cards or provided through official bank channels.
Chishi also warned about the growing use of “digital arrest” scams. In such cases, fraudsters impersonate police officers or officials from agencies such as the CBI and Enforcement Directorate. Victims are threatened with arrest over alleged Aadhaar or SIM misuse.
The workshop also highlighted other cyber threats, including WhatsApp hacking, deepfakes, parcel scams and loan-app sextortion. Police also flagged the use of mule bank accounts connected to online gaming, which can lead to victims’ bank accounts being frozen.
Public Prosecutor Temsunaro Jamir also addressed the workshop. She spoke about defamation under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the responsibilities of journalists.
