Delhi High Court rejects demand to ban Telegram and conduct NEET 2026 re-exam

Amid concerns surrounding examination-related content on messaging platforms, the Delhi High Court has rejected a petition that sought a ban on Telegram and demanded a re-examination for NEET 2026.

The plea had alleged that Telegram channels were being used to circulate examination material and sought directions to block the platform in India. It also requested a fresh conduct of the NEET 2026 examination.

However, the Delhi High Court refused to entertain the plea. The court observed that banning an entire platform was not the appropriate solution and noted that such issues should be addressed through proper legal and regulatory mechanisms.

The petitioner had argued that the alleged misuse of Telegram affected the fairness of the examination process. The plea also sought intervention regarding the conduct of NEET 2026.

During the proceedings, the court emphasised that actions against unlawful activities should be targeted rather than imposing a blanket ban on a communication platform used by millions of people. It declined to issue any directions for blocking Telegram or ordering a re-examination.

The ruling comes amid ongoing discussions around the misuse of digital platforms for sharing unauthorised content. Authorities have been taking steps to strengthen safeguards around competitive examinations and investigate instances of malpractice.

Telegram has faced scrutiny in several countries over concerns related to illegal activities conducted through certain channels. However, courts and regulators have generally focused on addressing specific violations rather than restricting entire platforms.

The latest decision highlights the judiciary’s preference for proportionate measures while dealing with concerns involving digital communication platforms and examination integrity.
