Cognizant restructuring under Project Leap may impact thousands of jobs globally

In a significant organisational shift, Cognizant is preparing for a large-scale restructuring initiative that could impact thousands of employees across its global workforce.

The move, called Project Leap and announced in April 2026, may affect up to 15,000 employees worldwide. The company expects to incur severance costs ranging between $230 million and $320 million as part of this transition. Cognizant currently has a workforce of over 357,000 employees, with more than 250,000 based in India.

A major share of the job impact is likely to be in India, where around 12,000 to 13,000 roles could be affected. This is mainly due to lower salary levels and severance costs compared to other regions.

CEO Ravi Kumar S stated that the company is moving towards a “broader and shorter pyramid” structure. This approach aims to combine digital capabilities with human work, reflecting a wider trend in the technology sector where automation and artificial intelligence are reshaping workforce models.

The restructuring highlights how companies are adjusting their operations to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
