Regional security and cybersecurity cooperation took centre stage as senior officials from China and 5 Central Asian nations met for the second ministerial dialogue under the Central Asia-China format.
The meeting brought together representatives from China, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to discuss rising threats linked to transnational organised crime, cybercrime, drug trafficking, extremism and human trafficking. The discussions also focused on improving intelligence sharing and strengthening cooperation between law enforcement agencies across the region.
During the meeting, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed that modern criminal networks are becoming more advanced, borderless and technology-driven. He highlighted the growing need for coordinated regional action, faster intelligence exchange and the use of modern technologies to tackle emerging threats.
Tokayev also raised concerns around cybersecurity and the misuse of artificial intelligence and digital platforms for spreading disinformation and enabling cybercrime activities. According to him, strengthening digital security has become critical as cyber threats continue to evolve rapidly.
The leaders additionally discussed the security challenges connected to regional transport and connectivity projects. Officials noted that large infrastructure routes could face risks linked to the smuggling of drugs, weapons and other illegal goods if stronger monitoring systems are not implemented.
Participants at the dialogue reaffirmed their commitment to expanding practical cooperation and improving operational information exchange between countries. The meeting also highlighted the importance of joint efforts to maintain long-term regional stability and security.
The latest discussions reflect growing regional concern over cyber threats and organised digital crime, especially as countries continue to increase their reliance on digital systems, AI technologies and cross-border connectivity projects.
