Robots and drones set to transform food delivery costs and profits

A new industry outlook suggests a major shift in food delivery economics as automation gains pace. According to Barclays, the cost of food delivery could fall to just $1 per order in the long term, driven by the growing use of robots and drones.

Currently, autonomous deliveries cost around $5 to $7 per order, which is already lower than traditional delivery methods. As technology improves and adoption scales, costs are expected to decline further, potentially adding billions in profits for food delivery companies each year.

Barclays estimates that autonomous deliveries, which currently account for less than 1% of total orders, could rise to 10% by 2035. This shift is expected to significantly reshape the global delivery ecosystem.

Early adopters such as DoorDash and Meituan are likely to benefit quickly from this transition. Meanwhile, companies like Uber and Prosus are also positioned well to take advantage of automation trends.

In the longer term, firms including Delivery Hero, its Middle East unit Talabat, and Grab are expected to see strong gains as they test and expand automation across different markets.

The report highlights how robotics and drone technology could redefine delivery operations, reduce costs, and improve efficiency across the industry.
