Apple’s highly anticipated AI-powered smart glasses may take longer to reach consumers, with a new report suggesting the device is now expected to launch in late 2027.
The revised timeline indicates a delay from earlier expectations, which pointed to an official announcement later this year and commercial availability in early 2027. According to reports, the company has faced development challenges while working on the wearable device.
The smart glasses remain a key part of Apple’s future product strategy. Reports suggest that outgoing CEO Tim Cook has strongly supported the project and considers it one of the company’s major priorities. Incoming CEO John Ternus, who is set to take over in September 2026, is also closely associated with the initiative and previously led the team developing the glasses.
The delay comes as competition in the smart glasses market continues to grow rapidly. Industry data released in March 2026 showed that the category expanded by 139% year-over-year during the second half of 2025 compared to 2024.
Much of this growth has been driven by the success of Meta’s AI-enabled smart glasses. Meanwhile, other technology companies are also increasing their focus on the segment. During its I/O 2026 event, Google introduced AI-powered smart glasses built on Android XR in partnership with Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The product is expected to reach consumers this fall.
Reports suggest Apple’s smart glasses could be offered in multiple frame styles and colour options. The company is said to be testing at least 4 frame designs, including large and slim rectangular styles as well as larger and smaller oval-shaped options. Colour finishes under consideration reportedly include black, ocean blue and light brown.
The glasses are expected to feature a multimodal AI model that will support interactions with an upgraded Siri and provide visual intelligence capabilities. However, the device is not expected to include augmented reality functionality. Apple is also reportedly developing advanced AR glasses with integrated displays, though those products are believed to be further away from launch.
