Apple and LG reportedly work on new smart home devices

Apple may be preparing to expand its presence in the smart home market through a reported partnership with LG Electronics. The companies are said to be working on a range of connected devices, including a smart doorbell, thermostat, smart lock and security cameras.

According to a report citing unnamed sources, the products would be part of an ecosystem designed to work with Apple’s new smart home hub, upgraded HomePod mini and a new TV set-top box. The smart home hub is expected to launch on October 13.

The reported lineup includes a deadbolt lock, indoor and outdoor security cameras and a floodlight camera. LG is expected to handle manufacturing and product support, while the products could carry the LG brand. Apple may oversee their design, features and engineering.

The development of these LG accessories has reportedly fallen behind Apple’s own smart home products. As a result, the devices are not expected to reach consumers for at least a few more months.

LG has reportedly sought regulatory approvals for several upcoming smart home products. Filings have revealed devices including the LG Video Doorbell Wired, Floodlight Cam, Outdoor and Indoor Cameras, Smart Deadbolt Lock, Smart Thermostat and Temperature Sensor.

The products are expected to support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread and Matter. The smart lock could also feature UWB technology for automatic unlocking when users approach.

The reported devices could significantly expand Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem as the company looks to connect smart home hardware with Siri and other AI-powered features. They are also expected to compete with Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest products.

Apple launched the iPhone Duo alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series last month at its ‘Surprise and Shine’ event. The company is expected to announce a new smart home hub, a 2nd-generation HomePod mini and an updated Apple TV 4K on October 13. The smart home hub is rumoured to feature a 6-inch square display and an integrated Siri AI experience.
