Web browsing on Android is getting more AI assistance in India as Google expands Gemini in Chrome to users across the country. The browser-based assistant can summarise webpages, answer questions, work with Google services and generate or edit images using Nano Banana.
Google said in a blog post that Gemini in Chrome is now available to all Android users in India. The assistant works directly within the browser, allowing users to interact with webpages without leaving the current tab or switching between apps.
Gemini in Chrome can summarise lengthy articles and answer questions about the webpage on screen. It can also connect with Google services such as Keep and Calendar. Users can access Nano Banana within the browser to customise or generate images while browsing.
Auto Browse comes to India
Google is also bringing Auto Browse to India on both desktop and Android. The agentic feature was launched in select global markets in January but was not previously available in India.
Auto Browse can perform certain multi-step tasks instead of only answering questions about a webpage. Users can ask it to handle tasks such as booking parking for an event, filling out a lengthy form or ordering groceries.
Access to Auto Browse in India is limited to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
Google said its Gemini models are trained to identify known threats such as prompt injection, which can attempt to manipulate an AI agent through webpage content. Auto Browse can also ask users for confirmation before completing certain sensitive actions.
Language support remains limited
Gemini in Chrome on Android initially supports US English and UK English. Google plans to add more languages over time.
The desktop version, in comparison, is available in 8 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil.
