In a move reflecting growing caution around powerful AI systems, Anthropic has introduced an updated version of its Opus model while deliberately restricting its most advanced capabilities.
The company has officially released Claude Opus 4.7, a new artificial intelligence model designed to enhance performance across coding and visual tasks. The update comes shortly after the launch of Claude Mythos, a more advanced model with restricted access due to its high capability in cybersecurity-related tasks.
Claude Opus 4.7 is built on the same architecture as Claude Mythos but has been intentionally scaled back to prevent potential misuse, particularly in cyberattacks. Despite these limitations, the model delivers notable improvements over its previous version.
The model is now widely available across all Claude platforms and can also be accessed through application programming interfaces. It is further integrated into enterprise platforms such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry. Pricing remains unchanged from the earlier Opus 4.6 version, with input tokens costing $5 per million and output tokens priced at $25 per million.
One of the key upgrades is enhanced multimodal capability. Claude Opus 4.7 can now process high-resolution images up to 2,576 pixels, or approximately 3.75MP, marking a 3X improvement. This allows the model to better analyse complex visuals such as charts, screenshots, and PDFs.
The model also shows significant progress in software engineering tasks. It can handle more complex and long-duration coding challenges with improved consistency and can verify its own outputs before delivering results to users.
In internal benchmark evaluations, Anthropic claims that Claude Opus 4.7 outperforms competing models like OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 and Google’s Gemini 3.1 Pro. However, it still remains less capable than the Claude Mythos Preview, which is currently accessible only to 40 organisations under Project Glasswing.
