Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced the acquisition of AI chip startup Taalas for an undisclosed amount, strengthening its position in the rapidly growing market for AI inference technologies. The move is aimed at improving performance and efficiency as demand rises for real-time AI applications.
Based in Toronto, Taalas develops specialised AI chips designed to reduce computing and memory bottlenecks during AI inference—the process of running trained AI models to generate responses and predictions. As AI adoption shifts from model training to large-scale deployment, inference chips have become a key area of competition for semiconductor companies.
AMD plans to integrate Taalas’ technology into its accelerator roadmap and develop system-level AI solutions using its AMD Instinct GPUs.
Vamsi Boppana, Senior Vice President of AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group, said, “AMD is building a full-stack AI platform that gives customers the flexibility to deploy the right compute solutions for every AI workload.” He added that Taalas’ technology and engineering team will strengthen AMD’s AI portfolio by delivering improved inference performance and efficiency.
Founded in 2023, Taalas raised $169 million in February, taking its total funding to approximately $219 million, to accelerate the development of chips optimised for AI models.
The acquisition is the latest in AMD’s expanding AI strategy. In November, the company acquired MK1, an AI software startup specialising in high-speed inference. It also acquired MEXT in June and added FastFlowLM to its Artificial Intelligence Group in July, further expanding its AI capabilities.
The deal comes as competition in the AI chip market intensifies. Earlier this year, Nvidia introduced a new AI system and processor built on technology from Groq, another startup focused on AI inference.
