Abhishek Gupta joins Akasa Air as Chief Information Officer (CIO), bringing more than two decades of experience across enterprise IT, digital transformation, technology operations and emerging technologies to the airline’s leadership team.
Mr Gupta joins Akasa Air after more than 11 years with DishTV, where he most recently served as Corporate Head – Information Technology. He joined DishTV in 2015 as Vice President – IT and went on to lead the company’s technology function, overseeing IT strategy, enterprise applications, technology operations, modernisation and digital initiatives.
His career spans several technology and telecommunications organisations. Before DishTV, he spent close to three years with Ericsson as Practice Lead – Mobility & Emerging Technologies. He previously served as Head of Corporate IT – India at Orange Business Services. He began his professional career with Tata Consultancy Services in 1999, building experience across enterprise technology, IT operations and digital transformation.
At DishTV, his responsibilities included technology strategy and operations, application management, product roadmaps and digital transformation initiatives. His experience also covers cloud adoption and the use of AI-led technologies as organisations increasingly modernise their technology environments.
Bringing enterprise technology experience to aviation
Mr Gupta’s move to Akasa Air comes at a time when technology is becoming increasingly embedded in how airlines operate and engage with customers.
For the aviation sector, the technology agenda now extends well beyond traditional IT infrastructure. Digital booking and customer journeys, enterprise applications, data platforms, cloud infrastructure, operational systems, automation and analytics are increasingly interconnected with business performance.
This has broadened the CIO’s role from managing technology operations to building an enterprise technology environment that can support scale, resilience and business growth.
For Akasa Air, which began commercial operations in 2022, this technology layer will become increasingly important as the airline continues to expand its network and operating footprint. Mr Gupta’s experience across large enterprise technology environments brings exposure to transformation challenges that sit at the intersection of technology, operations and business strategy.
A technology mandate shaped by scale
His move also marks a transition between two industries where technology plays a central role in managing large, distributed operations.
At DishTV, he worked within a business shaped by digital platforms, customer connectivity and technology-led service delivery. At Akasa Air, his role will sit within an operating environment where technology supports areas ranging from customer experience and commercial systems to operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making.
As Akasa Air continues to scale, the CIO function will increasingly sit close to the airline’s wider business agenda. Mr Gupta’s experience places him at that intersection, as aviation companies look to technology not only to run operations but also to build more connected, data-led and scalable ways of working.
