Creating and refining visuals is becoming faster and more flexible with OpenAI’s introduction of Images 2.6 across ChatGPT, Codex and the API. The latest update brings faster image generation, more precise editing capabilities and GIF creation, helping users turn creative ideas into polished visuals with greater ease.

Images 2.6 allows users to add motion to static images by creating GIFs. From animating brand mascots and characters to transforming product images into engaging loops, the feature opens up new possibilities for marketers, creators and businesses.

The scale of image creation across OpenAI’s platforms continues to grow. People worldwide now generate 4 billion images every week through ChatGPT, Codex and the API, averaging more than 500 million images per day.

The new model generates images 50% faster than its predecessor. Developers using the API can choose between 2 options: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst. When quality is set to low, Flare can generate images in as little as 6 seconds. It also improves layout quality for posters, product images and other professional visuals.

For projects that require greater detail and precision, GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst offers higher-quality image generation and improved consistency across editing rounds when quality is set to medium or high.

GIF creation also adds new possibilities for creative applications. Marketers can animate brand mascots for campaigns, while creators can develop social media reactions, memes and animated storyboards to explore character movements before video production. Even simple sketches can be transformed into animated characters for videos, games and other creative projects.

GIFs also offer businesses a more engaging way to communicate through personal reactions, product visuals and brand characters. Town, a startup developing an AI work assistant, used Images 2.6 through the API to explore how animated characters could add personality to everyday workplace interactions.

The update also gives developers greater control over image creation and editing. Image markup, which was already available in ChatGPT, is now coming to the API, allowing teams to identify specific areas where changes are required. SVG exports also make designs easier to use across websites, applications and print formats.

Additionally, a new complexity parameter allows developers to control the level of planning involved in generating an image. Lower complexity settings are suitable for quick edits, while medium and high settings work better for scenes involving multiple elements or detailed requirements. Image quality controls visual detail and fidelity, while complexity determines how much planning goes into the scene.

For most editing tasks, OpenAI recommends using low complexity for faster results and selecting image quality based on the requirements of the workflow.
