Meta’s Muse AI personal agent is gaining attention just days after its launch, quickly climbing Apple’s US App Store charts and attracting millions of downloads.

The app launched on September 8 and overtook ChatGPT as the leading free iOS app in the US on Friday. According to Sensor Tower, Muse recorded 730,000 downloads in about 5 days and had crossed 2.5 million downloads by Monday.

During the same 13-day period after launch, ChatGPT recorded 3.1 million downloads, while Anthropic’s Claude and Grok registered around 400,000 and 200,000 downloads respectively. Sensor Tower noted that the platforms had different release schedules, which affected the comparison.

As of Monday, Muse had around 1.5 million downloads on iOS and 1.1 million on Android.

Meta is positioning Muse as a personal AI agent capable of handling tasks across the web, including filling out forms and organising email inboxes. The app is powered by Meta’s Muse Spark family of AI models and marks the company’s larger push into the growing AI agent market.

“I think up to this point most of the agentic use cases have not really been for normal people,” Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said. “Now you’ve got Meta’s Muse and other agents out there that are starting to maybe get more potential for more broad-based adoption.”

The momentum around Muse also coincided with a more than 11% rise in Meta’s stock on Monday. Meta is offering the app for free, alongside monthly subscriptions priced at $20 and $100 depending on usage.

However, the product is also facing questions around privacy and security. Amazon has blocked Muse from accessing its shopping platform, citing concerns that the agent could bypass parts of its shopping experience and capture customer credentials and account data.

Amazon said it had not received advance notice about Muse accessing its store. “We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

Shopify, meanwhile, is working with Meta to support agentic checkout on its online stores.

It remains unclear whether Muse can sustain its early momentum, particularly as several AI apps have experienced strong launches before seeing interest decline.
