US President Donald Trump has announced plans to appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser, or “AI czar”, and establish an “AI force”, although he has not yet provided details on how either initiative would operate.
Trump made the announcement in a social media post on September 19, amid growing debate in Washington over the risks and regulation of artificial intelligence.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump wrote. “Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System.”
Trump has repeatedly argued against additional AI regulation, while concerns over potential risks from advanced AI systems have continued to grow. Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently warned that some people developing AI believe the technology could pose severe risks.
The planned appointment would mark Trump’s second AI czar. Venture capitalist David Sacks previously held the role before stepping down in March and moving to an external advisory position.
Sacks has also argued that AI developers should take responsibility for the safety of their products and that new federal rules are unnecessary.
The announcement comes ahead of Trump’s scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 24. The US and China are competing for leadership in AI, with both countries treating the technology as important to economic and national security interests.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York, with AI security, trade and other economic issues expected to be discussed.
The White House had not immediately provided further details on Trump’s proposed AI force or the appointment.
