Nila Vikhe Patil, a Green Party leader with family roots in Maharashtra, has been elected to Sweden’s Parliament from the Stockholm City constituency.
The 41-year-old has entered Sweden’s 349-member Riksdag after the national election held on September 13. She was part of the Green Party, which joined the opposition bloc that secured 176 seats in the election.
Born in Sweden, Nila spent her early years in Ahmednagar before returning to Sweden and building a career in politics. She is the daughter of educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil, who heads the Vikhe Patil Foundation, and the granddaughter of former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil. She is also the niece of Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.
Her family has a long history in public life. Her great-grandfather, Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, established Asia’s first cooperative sugar factory.
Speaking after her election, Nila said, “It feels nice to be a part of the 349-member Parliament. I am looking forward to contributing to the city and the country.”
She also said she wants to represent people who do not have a vote and work towards a future where children have access to clean water and a safer planet.
Nila has spoken about her strong connection with India and recalled the influence of her grandfather on her interest in public life. “I hope to make my grandfather proud. He made me read the state budget when I was 15,” she said.
She studied economics and law at the Gothenburg School of Business in Sweden and also attended Complutense University in Madrid. Nila has been associated with the Green Party for around 25 years.
Before entering Parliament, she worked as a political adviser in the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office during Stefan Lofven’s tenure, handling finance, taxation and housing matters. She also served on the Stockholm City Council and has worked at PwC since 2020, becoming a chartered accountant last year.
The Social Democrats emerged as the largest party with 99 seats, while the opposition bloc secured 176 of the 349 seats. The outgoing conservative-led coalition won 173 seats.
