Anthropic has reported a sharp rise in the role of its AI systems in developing next-generation technology, with Claude now contributing to 26% of the company’s artificial intelligence research and development work.
The San Francisco-based startup said Claude “leads” 26 per cent of its AI research and development work. It plans to publish such measurements regularly to provide greater visibility into how quickly AI is contributing to the development of the technology.
As of August, AI systems also collaborated with humans on more than 90% of the research work at the company, Anthropic said in a blog post on Thursday.
However, Claude is not yet working fully autonomously in any part of the measured research. Its contribution has increased significantly from 1% in March, based on a scale developed by Epoch AI, an independent nonprofit that tracks AI development.
The figures provide a detailed look at how a leading AI company is using the technology to advance its own research. They also come as concerns grow that AI could eventually contribute to its own development with limited human involvement.
Researchers have warned that more autonomous AI agents could develop behaviours that differ from their creators’ intentions, making them harder to monitor or control.
On Wednesday, OpenAI said it would regularly publish reports on unexpected or unauthorised AI behaviour and disclosed 6 reports involving unexpected or concerning model behaviour.
Anthropic said about 30,000 AI agents were carrying out research and engineering tasks on its main internal platform at any given time in August. Every action is screened before execution. Of more than 1 billion decisions made that month, about 1 in 47,000 was blocked.
The company also said 6% of its AI research computing power went towards safety work during a sample week in July. For research conducted by AI itself, the share was 12%.
Anthropic said these figures were conservative because computing power that supported both safety and capability was counted as capability work.
