A fresh environmental dispute has surfaced around a Tata Electronics manufacturing facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, which supplies components for Apple’s iPhone production ecosystem. State pollution authorities have alleged that wastewater released from the plant contaminated groundwater and nearby agricultural land, raising concerns among local farming communities.
The issue came to light after farmers reported pollution in open wells and surrounding farmlands. Following these complaints, authorities conducted 5 inspections between December 2025 and May 2026. According to the findings, wastewater from the facility was discharged into a rainwater harvesting pond located within the premises. Investigators alleged that the pond later overflowed, affecting groundwater and agricultural areas nearby.
The pollution control authority stated that corrective measures suggested in a communication issued on December 23, 2025, were not implemented. Subsequently, a notice dated May 25, 2026, was served to the company seeking an explanation on why power supply to the facility should not be disconnected and why its operations should not face closure over the alleged violations.
Responding to the allegations, Tata Electronics said it had conducted an independent assessment through an accredited laboratory. The company stated that the evaluation confirmed it was “in full compliance with all regulatory norms”. Tata Electronics further said it remains “committed to responsible business practices and protection of the environment and local communities” and has submitted its response to the concerned authorities.
The development comes at a time when India is strengthening its position in Apple’s global manufacturing network. Industry estimates suggest that India is expected to contribute 26% of global iPhone production in 2026, compared to 6% in 2022, underlining the country’s growing importance in the global electronics supply chain.
